Nemea stadium Nemea stadium

The stadium of the panhellenic Nemean Games, held every two years in honour of Opheltes, lies about 400 m southeast of the temple of Zeus in a partly natural hollow. Built at the end of the 4th century BC, it could accomodate 40.000 spectators.

Above: A rectangular building with inner colonnade probably served as a place with changing rooms. From here the athletes and the judges entered the stadium. - Below: The vaulted tunnel to the stadium was still being reconstructed in 2011, but since 2019 it is again the natural entrance.

Not noticed by most visitors: inside the tunnel the athletes waiting to enter the stadium have left ancient graffitis on the soft walls.
